Sharon Thieman

Sharon Thieman is a gifted artist who explores the harmony of shades and the interaction of lines and geometrical shapes through her various Temari.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Sharon has known herself as an artist since the age of four. This natural instinct to create, as evidenced in childhood was further developed when she attended College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan and received a BFA in Fine Art-Painting. As a painter for the first fifteen years of her professional career, Sharon refined her skills in drawing and design, while developing her intuitive sense of color.

As a professional artist she has created, displayed, and marketed her artwork in various settings throughout the United States. Her years spent as former President of Women in the Visual Arts gave her a chance to work with hundreds of women in the membership as she interfaced with the community and among other non-profit organizations to promote women artists and the arts in South Florida.

A pivotal point in Sharon’s career came when she was introduced to the Japanese craft of Temari. Upon learning about Temari, she began to create it as well as research its history. Subsequently she also connected with the Sennin Foundation, a center for Japanese Cultural arts in California and became an active member of the Japanese Temari Association in Japan. This enthusiasm has grown, until it currently still includes Temari, but also a broader range of various Japanese Art and Craft.

Currently residing in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Sharon is fully engaged in the Asian Studies Graduate Program at Florida International University. Sharon is continually creating and learning. As she seeks to more fully understand the Japanese language as well as the entire Asian Culture as she also examines the traditional Arts and Crafts of Japan as they adhere to Japanese Aesthetic.

"My paintings represent a visual journal of my life in Maine, reflecting my love of nature and my participation in it. Spending time outdoors walking, hiking, kayaking and biking, I have the opportunity to stop and look closely at my surroundings. It is this connection to nature that I want to share with others. Often, my intent is to give the viewer a sense of “place” – of being there, whether climbing a rock, floating down a river, or looking closely at various plant and animal life."
